I almost stepped on a snake

I was barefoot, exiting my room to get some tea. The lights were dim, and as I was putting my foot down I saw something move underneath it, a beautiful, small, black and yellow striped snake. I pretty much jumped out of my skin. Fortunately, we used the pool net to put it in a paper bag, and then we were able to put this guy outside.

I think this snake was eating all the crickets in our house, although now I'm nervous, just thinking about snakes under my bed, and scorpions in my bed...Ahhhhhh! And I never even make my bed! Which means it's easier for them to get in there. Ahhhh! The paranoia!

Anyways, I'm guessing this is a shovel nose snake, but he was trying to rattle his tail. Maybe all snakes do that, not just rattlers.

If anybody knows what kind of snake this is, please let me know.

I wish I had been caught on tape, just to see the look on my face and how my body reacted when I almost stepped on that snake. I can't even describe it, but I bet it was hilarious.

Sidenote: My fear of snakes has increased exponentially with this incident.

Looks like a Common Kingsnake.

The Common Kingsnake is a nonvenomous member of the "harmless" Colubridae Family, which includes gopher snakes, garter snakes and whip snakes. Mature adults are 30 to 85 inches long and come in a variety of colors and patterns, usually chocolate brown to black.

You should replace your fear of sharks with a fear of snakes. Then you can go swimming in the ocean.

Chris! I don't think I will ever fear snakes more than sharks. If water had different properties, ie, it was transparent and you could see all around you for miles, then I'd probably change my mind.

What an amazing find, albeit a scary one!

If you're going to be paranoid might as well tell you this: be careful if an animal might not creep up your bathroom can, coming from the sewers... mwahaha! Great blog, I hope you'll feel better soon.

Thank you by the way!!!

That seriously would have given me a heart attack.

When my little brother was in high school, he took an afternoon nap on his bed one weekend day and woke up to find himself face to face with a snake. He jumped out the window because the snake was between him and the bedroom door.

Hope your brother was ok after that scare...
