Virginia Tech.

Let me just write a couple words on the Virginia Tech tragedy, since it's been on my mind. What that killer did was terrible, tragic, pointless, sad, evil, cruel, and utterly selfish. He took away so many lives and hurt so many families... It really sickened me, plus I wish they hadn't released all his tape recordings, at least not right now, but that's another matter... What I'd like to say is this: don't lose faith in humanity or human nature because of this event. In fact, some people risked their lives to try and save others while this tragedy was taking place! So, we should remember to focus on the heroic, selfless actions that took place, and not focus too much on the evilness of this one character. And remember, good things are happening all the time, bad things too, but the thing is, we tend to forget the good things. Stuff that seems small and insignificant, like a stranger saying hello and giving a kindly smile. Or major stuff, like love shared between people, families, and friends. And things like devotion, actions of selflessness, of kindness, of compassion, it's all around us. All sorts of good stuff is always happening, I can't list everything because it would be impossible, and it would be an endless list, which is a good thing!

I'm an optimist...

I know exactly how you feel, and I completely agree with you. You summed it up really well.

I wish more people had an outlook like yours!

I too am an optimist. It's just so sad and heart wrenching.

I'm an optimist too and I think the human race is amazing and we are for the most part good. I have a spiritual side that believes God is working through us constantly. That was shown in the good happening thoughout the horror. People helping others even at the cost of their own lives.

you really inspire me, sebastien. i've been thinking a lot about the tragedy as well. my sister lives in VA, and her father-in-law went to VA Tech. it also happens that a woman I know from church, knows the girl who found the first two victims in the dorm room. so yes, it has sickened me as well, and there are no words for the pain the victims and their families are feeling. but what you have said here is in part what helps people to move on, through the pain, not past it. thank you.

Right on, Seb. One mustn't let one bad seed make us paranoid about everyone.

Moonbeam Baby: Thanks, it's so nice to know you feel the same way. Hopefully the families who lost loved ones can make it through their grief and find peace and joy in their lives again. It'll probably take many years, and I'm sure there will always be a level of pain and sadness that stays with them forever.

Frenchy: I know, I just saw a picture of all the victims, and I have to say, that was gut-wrenching.

Glorious: And I think this is how most things work, when something bad happens, yes it can be tragic and horrible, and frankly, I can't imagine how it is for the families and friends who lost loved ones... but, we can be thankful that there are actions of good, even in the midst of tragedy!

Good for Me: Awww, thanks! Wow, that is unbelievable, that connection... yes, it's easier for us as a nation to find peace, heal ourselves, and keep on believing in humanity, but I truly can't imagine the pain of the families and all the victims who were touched by this tragedy. They are in a place that is unique and frightening, and I hope they will recover and find support all around them.

Mariana: Yup! Gotta be careful, but it's true, one bad apple doesn't mean they're all bad!

Trying. Really trying.

What a fucking bastard this Cho dude though.

People who are optimistic live long and prosper. I'm doomed. :(

I think life is a balance of many things, good and evil are two of them and they aren't necessarily opposites.

Oh, swinging pendulum of fate! I shake my fist at you.

Your post makes me sad there are people out there that actually have little faith in humanity. That never even crossed my mind when the VT thing happened. I just chlaked it up to another crazy guy and moved on. I don't get very deep and start to wonder about humanity. I see it as an isolated incident and just go on with my life.

Great post, I share your attitude. May I even go so far as suggesting we forgive the shooter for his crimes against humanity? I know this will be an unpopular idea, especially since the incident is so fresh. But I really believe that hating someone who has committed an evil act only hurts the hater - it causes you to carry unnecessary baggage and pain.

WAT: I know, there is no getting around how much of an asshole that kid Cho was...

Lauren: True, good and evil are definitely not always opposites, lots of gray...

Mrmanuel: Hmmm, just seemed like some people I knew were seeming really depressed about this event and how it reflected on humanity... You have the right attitude!!!

Sonja: That's very true! It's important to not waste our energy on hate, and focus on making sure people are safe in the future.
