Do Social Networking Sites Kind of Annoy You?

Ok, I've just about had it with these friend-networking sites like Myspace, Friendster, and Facebook. I'm not going to act like I've never used these sites, but I will use this as my defense: the only reason I ever joined was because I got this illness and I needed something easy to do that would occupy my attention. Haha, don't you like how I partake in the forbidden fruit but find a great excuse for doing so!!!

Truth be told, it was kinda nice reconnecting with old friends, plus keeping in touch was a lot easier. So I started softening up a bit on my previously inexplicable hatred of these sort of sites... it was fun leaving friends stupid messages... but my leniency wasn't going to last...

I think Myspace is the worst, it is just such a piece of shit, it's always buggy and the default design looks like crap. Plus they got bought by some stupid company run by a megalomaniac. Facebook is a little better designed than Myspace but it strikes me as so damn posh and exclusionary. It also just feels so intrusive, anytime you change any little thing on your profile everyone you know is alerted! Feels like Orwell's 1984... Friendster isn't even worth talking about.

I don't know, there's something about these sites that is soooo annoying, I can't quite put my finger on it. I guess they seem so fake to me, or, people come across as really fake in the way they attempt to define and present themselves. It feels like everyone is advertising themselves, or trying to sell themselves. I know I'm being pretty harsh and maybe reading a lot into nothing, I mean, seriously, who cares? Well, I don't know what it is, but I felt this crazy urge to just trash these sites, I can only assume I'm joining a growing chorus of people who hate these sites. Hmmm, I do still use these sites, albeit rarely, well... I feel like an old person talking about how they hate these new fandangled technologies, a condition otherwise known as misocainea (someday I will have to explain how in God's name I know that word!). But I really do like new technologies, witness my love of Youtube!

Anyways, do you hate these sites? If you do, please give me the reasons, I feel silly railing against these sites with no coherent argument! Plus I still find them useful... I'm sure there's a lot of analogies I could make right now about using something but hating it... but I can't think of anything.

My pet hate is MSN, because at least in my experience people only use it when they have nothing important to say, and just want to waste your time and theirs. A guy I knew never had anything to say about any of the subjects I talk about on my blog, didn't really care about anything in my personality, but would "stay in touch" by saying on MSN "Hi, lovely morning, I'll talk to you later." If he didn't have anything to say to me, then why did he bother me? It felt like having this stranger peeking through my window just to check up on me and go. To say nothing of a girl who became obsessed with her ex-boyfriend and used MSN to complain to me about him five times a day, writting sheets and sheets. I'll never use that technology again.

I can't address the issue myself as I've never used any of them, and only heard of MySpace. I've read lots of railing against MySpace on other blogs. The consensus being that MySpace is blogging for young adults (not just teen but people in their 20s). Not my demographics.

I started a my space a couple of months ago...I think I didnt give it more than a couple of hours and I trashed it...seemed you had to ask people to be your friend...reminded me of kindergarten.......
this blogger format is the best I think..

I have a My Space, don't use it too often, mainly use it for music and to keep in the know with a few authors I like that have a myspace page. I get annoyed when people get annoyed with me for not visiting their page EVERYDAY and commenting EVERYTIME they change it. So lame.

I have a MySpace account too, and I spend most of my time swearing at it. Funny how even though it's down for "maintenance", the same crap crops up after the alleged "maintenance" is completed. Last night I wasn't able to look at any bulletins because they said that section was down for "special maintenance" for an hour. I checked back two hours later and it was still down. The only real reason I'm on there is to catch up with friends now. That's the only reason now.

i have a friendster account. mostly cause everyone of my friends have one. supposedly, it's so you can keep in touch. i dont use it much though. i used to but it all seem pointless and i didnt bother much anymore.

i hate it when people try to add you and they dont have clue who you are. and i hate how some people take closeup photos of themselves and then put the caption like "urgh.. im ugly"/"im a mess". dude, if you dont like the photo, dont post it on your page!

sometimes, when i have nothing else to do, i'll browse my friends page and have a good laugh. the photos some people post can be pretty ridiculous.

We use MySpace and for the most part, love it. It does have some glitches that make it slow at times, but this is probably due to the tremendouns amount of people who use it. I like it because I can connect with old friends, and stay in contact with them. I can drop them a quick note, see some of their currect pictures, etc. I love it.

Mariana: Oh man, that sounds annoying!!! HAha, sometimes it's not so much the program but the people using the program!!! Love that generic how's the weather, or stay in touch comments, I bet the look of anger on your face was priceless!

Bice: Yeah, it probably is, didn't realize that many people were using those services to blog or anything...

Shaymus: Yeah, I like blogger too, except for the glitches!

Mr Fab: It's tough to pardon you on this one, especially after you tried to steal Lindsay Lohan away from me! But you know, we can't all be perfect, so I'll let this slide.

Silverneurotic: I understand that, it's not like you can be at the computer all day!

Tara: Yeah, catching up with friends is such a good thing though, that it kinda makes up for how annoying those sites can be!

Jos: Haha, sort of like those people are fishing for compliments when they do that! I haven't checked my friendster thing in a while, but I kept getting some pretty lewd messages...

Mrmanuel: You are not alone, I have many friends who love Myspace, and I mean, it is a wonderful idea. There's just something annoying about it, I wish I could really put my finger on it.

funny, i was just telling a friend the other night about my blog and how i feel that the community of bloggers i've met on blogspot and typeopad seem so different from the community of people i've seen on MySpace. I don't have a MySpace account, nor have i ever, but I have searched to find a few people.

I think ultimately it may have to do with the purpose for being there or here. Though, I can't pin down what that is.

I'm with you! I hate all those stupid "here's me in 100 words or less" sites. I've never been into them. I prefer blogs.

I've never tried these sites because my impression was that they are more for teenagers, and this was not the main audience I wanted to correspond with. I could be wrong, but it sounds like I haven't missed anything! I'm more interested in people's wisdom and thoughts about their life experiences.

I agree about Myspace--that site is very complicated and not user friendly. Friendster I didn't like either. Facebook is what I use, and I like it a lot for being about to keep in touch with a lot of people. I don't keep much personal information on it since I think it is pretty fake and difficult to sum up personality in a few words...
I think the concept is great though for keeping in touch with people, but the sites can't be too complicated like myspace--then it's not fun.

Good for Me: There's something about blogging that I like a lot more... but it is hard to pinpoint, I guess I feel like you can understand people a little bit better through blogging.

Lauren: Alright, go blogging!

Sonja: Yeah, I mean, those sites can be ok and serve a purpose, but blogging is a bit more fun in my opinion, I feel like you can understand people a bit better plus you learn tons of random interesting things!

Frenchy: These sites are great for staying in touch, so i do feel bad slandering them with so much gusto!!!
