NBA Playoffs. Victor Hugo. Romanticism. Caspar David Friedrich.

The NBA Playoffs start today. This is very very important. I think. If you don't already have a team to root for, or you just don't care about basketball, well, I still think you should cheer for a team. I recommend you cheer for the Phoenix Suns. You will thank me in the end.

In other news... I finished Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris, such an amazing book. Unfortunately, since I liked it so much, I'm going to have to read more of this writer's works, and, uh, his novels seem to be very long (some writers have too much time on their hands, if this guy had kept a more active lifestyle, maybe his books would've been a little more concise?)... well, maybe I will read some of his poetry instead, read his other novels later. But this book I just finished, it was great, really well-written, and the story itself is good (although a little silly and predictable at times). I'd tell you about the story, but I'd probably give it away or more likely than not you already know the story.

Well, I'll tell you a bit about the story, for those of you who don't know... there's a 'magical' goat in the story who's able to do lots of stuff, like, impersonate people and do all sorts of other hilarious stuff which I wish I could teach my dog how to do... and then there's a hunchback character, and he's basically a fighting machine and he's exactly like Stallone in the movie Rambo, blowing bad guys away, except he doesn't use rocket launchers and sniper rifles, he uses beams and rocks and super-strength... another character is a beautiful girl who goes by the name of Esmerelda. Everybody in the story loves her except for one person, but this one person happens to be the person she loves! And this guy, whom she loves, is a total bozo, which is totally sad, but hey, this is a tragedy, so that kinda stuff happens in tragedies. And people die in tragedies, which I don't like. I like happily ever after stories, well, most of the time, although we all know happily ever after is an illusion, people grow old and fat and hog the television remote and don't help clean the dishes, not to mention the kids they have, who more likely than not are spoiled brats, always whining and trying to strongarm their parents into buying them stuff, and whining about wanting to go see a Britney Spears' concert...

Anyways.

Victor Hugo was part of the romantic movement, I'm not too familiar with writers from that movement, except for Chateaubriand. I'm mostly familiar with romanticism in the realm of 19th century painting... specially German romantic painters, there were a bunch of great ones, one of my favorites is Caspar David Friedrich... Some of Friedrich's paintings are very well known, but he also did some unbelievable drawings. His work tends to be sad and spiritual, and the colors tend to be low-key... I included some pictures of his work down below. And if there is one thing we can all probably agree on, it's that Caspar David Friedrich was a great tree painter. I'm guessing he really liked trees. And owls. Although, I'm not sure how he felt about gophers, but I'm willing to bet that if I study his paintings a little more I will be able find that out, and I will promptly get back to you on that (I must admit it would be a huge disappointment if I were to find out that Friedrich was a fan of gophers, we all know they are terrible, terrible creatures who are always cooking up nefarious plots).

Back to Hugo... Hugo was famous for his writing, but I found out he did lots of drawings and paintings, I guess he was multi-talented like William Blake... Although, I've searched the internet for Hugo's drawings, and I've only been able to find a couple, but they look pretty cool. Nothing mind-blowing, but cool enough...

Here is one of the few Hugo drawings I found on the internet...

And here are a couple of Caspar David Friedrich's paintings and drawings...

Paris Hilton. College Basketball. Victor Hugo.

Paris Hilton might be going to jail. This is terrible, shocking, malicious news. What are we going to do for all those days she's in jail? How will I find joy in my life without the colorful shenanigans of this celebrity? We need to band together and create a support group, because I have a feeling we are going to be very depressed and the coolness factor of life will get knocked down a couple notches if she ends up in jail. True story.

In other news... anyone watching the college basketball tournament? I'm torn, I don't know who to cheer for in the final, Ohio State or Florida? See, I like Ohio State's Greg Oden, but I really like Florida's Joakim Noah (because he's French? and he's the son of Yannick Noah? maybe). I was pretty sad in the first place, my school didn't make it into the tournament (I don't know if they ever have... well at least we were good in football), and Georgetown didn't make it to the final either which was sad... And the thing is, I can't watch a sports game without cheering for someone, and if I really don't care for either team I usually cheer for the underdog or whatever team has a cooler logo. Florida does have a cool logo, can't go wrong cheering for alligators, those are dangerous creatures you know, and buckeyes don't strike me as very dangerous, but who knows, maybe they are but I've never heard of a buckeye attacking a human being.

In other news... I started reading Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris. Just started so I have nothing informative to say, I'm slightly worried it might be extremely boring, but I'm taking a chance on it. I've never read any of Hugo's works, and frankly, I'm staying away from Les Miserables, not only because it's a crazy long book, but also because I've had my fill of socially conscious novels, I feel like every 2 out of 3 books I've read is all about social struggle, which is fine, but I like the occasional story about warfare, zombie attacks, and a love story sprinkled here and there.

Sports Heaven? NFL Playoffs and B-ball. Television and What It Means To Me.

My diatribe is unoriginal and my viewpoint is probably shared by many. That being said, I'm still going to spill my silly, caustic, unoriginal thoughts...

Do you like violence? Crazy people plastering each other with bone-crunching hits? Seemingly pointless violence all in the name of some fictitious glory? If so, then the NFL playoffs are for you!!!

Yeah, you need to grapple with the irony and contradictions and silliness that mar professional sports. Especially professional football. But once you get the irony, the silliness, once you get past the fact that these grown men are willingly punishing and torturing their bodies all while trying to manipulate a ball so that the little orb does their bidding and they can 'win' a game... well, once you get past that it's very easy to enjoy the game, and believe in this magical realm of heroes and heroic plays...

Did I say heroes? Heroic plays? Well, I have a feeling that my heavy-handed sarcasm has already given you an idea of how tired I am of sports announcers, reporters, and many others who go on and on about how some player is such a goddamn hero. This player, this person, he plays a 'game' for a living, makes millions of dollars while doing it, seriously, I hate how the term heroic is tossed around in the sport's world with such flippancy. Anyways, that said, I do have a decent amount of respect for a lot of these athletes. Many work very hard, and have pretty amazing talents.

It's too easy to rip on professional sports, but televised sporting events have been a great diversion for me during my illness. Believe it or not (probably not) after my spiteful diatribe... I even find some inspiration in the sports world... I guess I just have a split personality when it comes to sports, a love hate thing going.

I think the main thing that angers me is this: had I been healthy I wouldn't have been wasting my time with television and sports. I never watched tv before I got sick, so in a sense the unwitting tv symbolizes my illness and weakness. Poor tv did nothing to me, it's actually helped a lot, but it stands for bad things to me, namely my being too ill to do anything over than watching television. Sure, I know what you're thinking, Sebastien, just don't watch tv, rest in your bed or something. I did that, trust me, for months and months... but I found that the television fills a vacuum and distracts my mind, distracts me from pain or fatigue or both those things... And there's this vicarious thing I got going with sports, it helps me dream...

I know. I'm coming across as overly bitter and frustrated. My head's just hurting a bit at the moment, but you know, I am seriously thankful to just be alive. Nothing like remembering all the pain I've gone through and just being thankful, thankful to breath this air and able to see the world and be with people I love.

Anyways, we got some good games today! Colts at the Ravens, oh boy oh boy! I'm cheering for the Colts (I spent a good part of my youth in Indy)... and then we got the Eagles at the Saints later! Go Saints, I'm cheering for them because I like the city of New Orleans, and Reggie Bush, that guy is great. Tonight, we even got some b-ball on tv, Magic at the Suns... Wow, this is like serious overload, and tomorrow, Patriots at the Chargers, now that is gonna be a game!

What a great sports weekend.

Sharks, Basketball, and Project Gutenberg

First off, hope you all had a merry x-mas!

Let me tell you about this really cool book I got, although it certainly is going to mess with my mind. The book? A book on sharks! It has glorious graphic big fat photographs of these evil demonic man eating sharks... There's even some vicious photos of people after shark attacks (how unnecessary is that!), seriously, am I ever going to be able to go swimming in the ocean again? Heck, am I ever going to be able to overcome the mental hurdle to even go swimming in a swimming pool again!? Yes, my fear of sharks just keeps getting greater, and yet, somehow, I've learned to embrace the fear, I relish it... I really do think sharks are some of the coolest creatures!

In other news, a buddy of mine proposed this thing to me. He said that when I'm better, he wanted to start a basketball team with me, sign us up in a league, you know, at some place like the YMCA. Man, of course I'm looking forward to being better from this illness because that'll just be heaven in and of itself, but this b-ball thing is really something I'm looking forward to! Playing basketball! Always been my favorite sport, I've always loved playing pick-up games... And now my health is doing so much better that imagining myself playing some basketball in the future is a lot more believable. I'm so impatient, I wish I could play right now!! Now! Now!

But really I'm just thankful I'm in less pain, my headaches are almost nonexistent except for brief flare-ups! Finally not having that constant vicious pain in my head, seriously, life is so much EASIER!!! I'm still fatigued, but it's diminishing, not as fast as I'd like of course, but I'm positive lots of good things are going to happen soon... just gotta be cool, not get claustraphophic about my situation or try to rush or force anything. I'll be able to do things when my body allows me, I can already concentrate more, proven by the fact that I can read so much more than before. Reading isn't even an effort like it used to be a while back, now it's easy and enjoyable like it was when I was healthy. Of course I still can't draw very often and the stuff I do when I can is cartoony stuff, not dawing from life or anything, but I just gotta be patient, it's gonna happen!

I'm also excited because I got a couple art project commissions lined up for when I'm better! Nice to know I'll have some guaranteed income whenever I can get back to work.

Books On the Internets
Wanted to give you a cool link, in case you haven't heard of it... It's called the Project Gutenberg, and it's a site where they post books online, and it's all legal and free... So far I haven't really found any American writers at this site, but there's lots of French writers, lots of short stories, and they seem to have lots of original text and also English translations. Check out Maupassant's short story "Le Horla" if you have time, bout a guy who gradually goes insane.

Steve Nash and Soccer

I'm so tired today... will be visiting everyone's blogs and responding to comments when I feel more awake! So for now, I'm posting a couple cool clips of Steve Nash, the Suns' point guard, he's a ridiculously good basketball player, but he's also got some soccer skills as the following clips demonstrate...

Thoughts on Edgar Allan Poe and Basketball

First off, keep voting for me, and clicking on my pic over at 25peeps.com (I'm the guy staring at his hands with the dramatic lighting). You can vote every day by clicking on my pic. Only with your help can we defeat the competition, which is daunting (as my loyal general Babs pointed out!!!), have you seen all the tits and ass I have to go up against, it's ridiculous! I'm beginning to wonder if 25peeps isn't some sort of softcore porn site. But that, of course, is a topic for another day. Anyways, vote for me so that you may help me in my quest for world domination and my courageous attempt to thwart the impending duckbill platypus conspiracy.

Quick aside: My dog is chewing on the toilet.

Edgar Allan Poe
Now, I haven't read Mr. Poe's work since back in the day when I was a wee little schoolboy. I'm not quite sure why they made us read his work in school, his writing is brilliant, but his subjects and themes are a little macabre and intensely psychological, to say the least, and Poe's writing certainly went over my head at the time (I just thought his stuff was creepy).

Well, I'm not a big fan of short stories, but I said what the hell and decided to start reading this dude, got this nice little anthology of his work that I found. I FREAKIN' LOVE HIS STORIES! I'm so happy I started reading him again, well happy might be the wrong adjective, for godsakes, his writing is about as dire and murderously crazy as literature gets. Anyways, reading Poe has made me realize that I need to explore a whole new genre of fiction, horror stories. There doesn't need to be murderous bloodbaths in the stories, I tend to prefer the psychological aspects of fear and horror, moreso than bloody murders and physically appalling scenarios. So, if you have recommendations for me, please let me know of writers or stories I should check out...

Basketball
Have you seen the Phoenix Suns? They've won 12 in row, playing with panache and a sweet style, how can you not like this team, even if you aren't from Phoenix. They make basketball fun, run and gun, such a nice change of pace from the 90s where basketball was all muscle and grind, really really boring I thought. My art studio (which my buddies are keeping for me till I get better) is right next to the Suns' arena, I can't wait to get better so I can catch some games. It's been a long time since I've been interested in going to a sports game, but you know what, after watching the Suns on tv, I feel like they put on a great show which would be fun to see in person...

On the USA Basketball Team

Since the World Championships are coming up I thought I'd post this. Too bad the guy Carter humiliated was on the French team. Anyways, I'm cheering for the US this summer.
